Abstract

Utility or fantasy? Lingerie is more (or perhaps less) than mere underwear. Dorothy Parker’s maxim ‘Brevity is the soul of underwear’ contrasts with Dior’s ‘Without foundation there can be no fashion’ and Sigmund Freud’s ‘At the root of every taboo, there must be desire.’ Calling attention to what it conceals, is lingerie for our own pleasure or someone else’s? Will it ever be the same since the invention of Lycra and Spanx?
