Most people get dressed every day. Subconsciously or not, each of us makes selections according to multiple cultural, economic, social, environmental and physical factors. Since the birth of capitalism, these choices are often made from within a fashion system. Fashion and dress provide rich sources for historical and cultural research and allows scholars like Breward to track changing attitudes to the self, to the body, to society, and to fashion and dress. Although once considered ‘hemline history’, the history of fashion has become more concerned with context and meaning, allowing more complex and nuanced cultural analysis.
