‘To Professor Benson, From Douglas Mawson, with every good wish for the New Year’ – so reads the inscription in this ‘Anniversary volume’. Douglas Mawson (b. 1882) and William Noel Benson (b. 1885) were both born in England but grew up in Australia. They crossed paths professionally in the early 1900s and kept in touch in subsequent years. Mawson’s geological interests led him on expeditions into Antarctica – his first aboard Shackleton’s Nimrod from 1907 to 1909; the BANZARE expedition was his last. Benson became Chair of Geology and Mineralogy at the University of Otago in 1917 – today the Benson Fund is administered by the Department of Geology to ‘support field-based research’ at Otago.
