Abstract

Astounding magazine was in the Clayton Magazine publishing stable until the firm went bust in March 1933. From the start of publication in January 1930 Wesso painted every single cover for Astounding Stories under the editorship of Hiram Gilmore Bates III (1900-81), known as Harry. Bates was a recently hired editor for Clayton Publications when William Clayton suggested to Bates they publish a ‘period-adventure’ pulp magazine as a competitor to Hugo Gernsback’s Amazing Stories. Bates was also a writer of SF and the 1951 film The Day the Earth Stood Still was based on his short story Farewell to the Master written in 1940. When Street and Smith restarted Astounding Stories in October 1933, F. Orlin Tremaine (1899-1956) took the helm as editor.
