Hans Waldemar Wessolowski (c. 1894-1948), better known as Wesso, was born in Gradziądz, Poland (formerly part of the German Empire of the early 20th century). Wesso apparently ‘jumped ship’ into the US about 1914. Having studied art in Berlin, he began supplying art to American pulp magazines in the late 1920s and became the main artist for Astounding magazine from its inception in January 1930. He painted the first 34 covers. Hal Salive bought his first Astounding magazine aged 15 and went on to collect almost all issues until his death in 2012. Salive purchased this May 1930 issue in 2011 from an eBay dealer in Lemont, Illinois. He paid US$260.00 for the magazine and $50.00 for priority shipping.
