Abstract

‘It is almost impossible to follow the later developments of physical or general chemistry without a working knowledge of higher mathematics’ – so begins the preface of Mellor’s Higher Mathematics. Mellor, due to his early self-education, lacked formal training in mathematics and had first-hand experience of what many chemistry students were missing in their knowledge of the subject. He initially thought of writing this helpful volume before leaving New Zealand but it wasn’t until he arrived at Owens College and was encouraged by Dixon that he realised the idea. Here is his annotated personal copy of the 1902 edition.
