Abstract

Professor Harold Baily Dixon was Chair of Chemistry at Owens College from 1886 until his retirement in 1922. His main area of research involved work ‘upon gaseous explosions [which] opened a new era in combustion research’ (Proceedings of the Royal Society, 1932). Dixon was an excellent teacher and a great advocate of experimental research. It was he who suggested Mellor research the combination of hydrogen and chlorine – the theme of his doctoral thesis.
