George Malcolm Thomson lectured in chemistry at the King Edward Technical College and was the secretary and superintendent until 1898. Mellor came to Thomson’s attention when he attended his night classes in 1889. He arranged a scholarship and time off from Sargood’s for Mellor to attend University. This letter of recommendation was written for Mellor by Thomson who enthusiastically claimed of Mellor ‘he’s the coming man’.
