Abstract
While at University, Mellor studied Physics, Chemistry, Pure and Applied Mathematics, Biology, Zoology, Logic, Psychology, Ethics and Latin. He had to take his final exams twice as the boat taking his papers back to England sank off Cape Horn in South America. This certificate shows that in 1897 he was awarded his BSc. Mellor also won the senior scholarship in Chemistry. He received first class honours for his MSc thesis on the cyanide process, and in 1899 won the coveted 1851 Exhibition Science Scholarship, which gave him £150 per year for two years. This allowed him undertake a PhD at Owens College, Manchester.
