Abstract

On 6 December 1879, the Mellor family arrived at Lyttleton on the Hurunui, a ship built in 1875 by Palmers and Co. for the New Zealand Shipping Company. Under Captain Barclay, it was a 114 day journey for the family, consisting of father Job Mellor, mother Emma, and sisters Ada, Agnes, and Gertrude. Joseph, who was ten, was born in Lindley, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, on 9 July 1869. Another sister, Nellie, was born on the voyage out and given Hurunui as her middle name. The family would spend some two years in the Kaiapoi area before moving south to Dunedin.
