Abstract
The British National Formulary (BNF) is designed to provide doctors, pharmacists and other health professionals with information regarding the selection, prescribing, dispensing and administration of medicines. New Zealand students used this formulary until 2012 when the New Zealand National Formulary was established (it was based on the BNF and adapted for the New Zealand environment). The BNF owed its existence to the National War Formulary which was prepared in 1939. After the war, the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and the British Medical Association wanted to continue publication of a general formulary. The first edition was published in 1949.
