Abstract

A publishers’ binding is where a binding is designed and decorated for an entire edition (or batch), and paid for by the publisher. In the early 19th century, two types of works put pressure on binders to move towards standardizing bindings, or at least establishing in-house styles: Bible printing, which was initiated by various Bible Societies, and annuals and gift books, beginning with Ackermann’s Forget Me Not: a Christmas and New Year’s Present for 1823. This case-bound Confessions of Christendom for Clark of Edinburgh reveals printed advertising reused for the spine backing. The spine title was certainly block printed flat before being attached to the book.
