Abstract

With no word on La Pérouse, the French (amidst internal revolution) commissioned d’Entrecasteaux to search for him. On 29 September 1791, the Recherche and Espérance sailed out of Brest, and although La Pérouse was not found, the voyage was very successful, continuing scientific observations in Tasmania, New Caledonia, parts of New Guinea, the Solomons, South-west Australia, and Tonga. D’Entrecasteaux died during the voyage and ‘naturaliste’ Labillardière completed the account of the voyage, which was accompanied by a superb album of engravings after the drawings of Piron, the expedition’s official draughtsmen.
