Abstract
This South Polar Map by Guillaume de l’Isle (1675-1726) depicts the bottom half of the world looking up from the South Pole to the Equator. It includes routes taken by explorers such as Magellan and Dampier, among others. De l’Isle was known as a ‘scientific cartographer’ who began a reformation in mapmaking, focusing on actual discoveries not conjecture and supplementing the information in his maps by researching travel books. Note that the Solomon Islands feature twice due to two different explorers’ opinions of where they were in the Pacific.
