Abstract

Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) was a geographer, Doctor of Theology, and an ordained Franciscan monk who lived for most of his life in Venice, where he became the official cosmographer to the Venetian Republic in 1685. He was one of the foremost mapmakers in Europe of his time and was globe-maker to Louis XIV. This map of the Western Hemisphere includes an early rendition of the coastline of New Zealand and depicts California as an island.
