Captain ‘Titus’ Oates and Robert Falcon Scott, along with three others, perished on the ill-fated return journey from the South Pole in March 1912. Described as ‘overambitious, over-complex and overmanned’ (Bryan, 2011), the 1910-1913 British Antarctic Expedition aboard Terra Nova, was beaten to the Pole by the much better prepared Norwegian, Roald Amundsen. Despite this failure, the expedition garnered a great deal of scientific information which helped to furnish publications for the next 50 years. Emerald rock cod (Trematomus bernacchii) and striped rock cod (T. hansoni) are named for Louis Bernacchi and Nicolai Hanson – Antarctic explorers both.
