Abstract

This majestic looking building was the Seacliff Lunatic Asylum and the photograph was taken a year after Truby King arrived at the facility to take up the position of Medical Superintendent. It is quite possible that the image was taken by Truby King himself as he was a keen photographer and often photographed his patients. Clearly the women in this image are not patients but the friendly nursing staff in their starched white aprons.
