Abstract
Truby King bought land on the Huriawa Peninsula at Karitane in 1898 and had a house built there in 1901. His daughter, Mary, called him the ‘first conservationist’ since he built the house around a tree in the living room rather than cut it down. King sold the house to the Lawson family in 1925 and they still own it today.
