Abstract

Published in 1862, Salambo is set in Carthage in the third century BC. Gibbings was not a fan of his work for the 1931 Golden Cockerel Press edition of Gustave Flaubert’s work but he received positive reviews in the fine arts magazine, Studio. The engravings are described by the publication as having ‘dramatic boldness and grandeur’ and being virtually ‘perfect’ in combination with their placement and relationship to the text.
