Abstract

By 1936 Gibbings had divorced Moira and had fathered another child, Vahine (1934), with Elisabeth Empson, a woman twenty years his junior. Elisabeth was one of five sisters, including Molly and Patience, from a ‘well-to-do’ family, who visited him at Waltham St Lawrence. Gibbings and Elisabeth married in 1937 and had another two children: Tiare (1937) and Shaun (1946). The blurb of this volume, The Twelve Months, says that ‘a remarkable harmony in artistic inspiration’ was evident between author, Llewelyn Powys, and artist, Robert Gibbings. They had become great friends since first working together in 1932-33 and both were pleased to collaborate again. Gibbings designed the edition, drew 28 wood engravings, and oversaw the printing of the volume at the Oxford University Press.
