Eric Gill died on 17 November 1940. Even after death his didacticism continued. Some of his smaller, less well-known essays were published by his wife Mary in 1942 under the heading: Last Essays. They contain Gill’s thoughts on art, private property, art in education, 500 years of printing, and the leisure state, and were aimed at his fellow workmen – the ‘Priesthood of craftsmanship’. The title-page device of St. Thomas’ hands was designed by Gill for use on all his works; Id Quod (1926) was the first book for which it was used. The word ‘Veritas’ (in Latin: truth) was added later.
