Abstract

In 1928, Gill agreed to ‘do engraving for all kinds of bookwork’ exclusively for the GCP. And once again he applied his skills to illustrate his sister’s The Constant Mistress, her second verse publication which appeared in 1934. It was seen as a ‘sister’ volume to Sonnets & Verses. The type used was Caslon Old Face and there were six engravings executed by Gill. This scarce prospectus has his ‘The Empty Bed’ image illustrating ‘The Young Girl’s Room’, which appears on specimen page 37. In the final published work the poem is on page 39.
