Abstract

Like Schneeman, John Schoenherr (1935-2010) was a graduate of the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and was well-known for his black and white drawings for publications’ interiors. He was responsible for the unmistakable and enduring drawings that illustrated Frank Herbert’s Dune series in the Astounding/Analog magazine in the early 1960s. Schoenherr painted for SF, Fantasy, horror and children’s books, but his greatest love was the natural world and later in his career he concentrated on wildlife art. Controversially, it is thought that artist Ralph McQuarrie  ‘borrowed’ from one of Schoenherr’s drawings of a shaggy-haired alien beast for his design of Chewbacca, the lovable Wookiee from the Star Wars series. This Philip K. Dick novel features an example of Schoenherr's cover artwork.
