Ronald William ‘Josh’ Kirby (1928-2001), the English artist responsible for the ‘pregnant aliens’ on Barrett’s Stress Pattern, is most notable for his long-running artistic collaboration with Terry Pratchett and his series of Discworld novels. Kirby was unusual in the SF art world in that he usually read the books before illustrating them.
