Abstract

When the Otago University Training restaurant moved to Tennyson Street (from Stuart Street), the Council ran a competition to name it. Students and staff came up with ‘Polyfiller’, and ‘Dan’s Diner’, after Dan Doubleday, the head lecturer. The eventual winner was Joseph Mellor, chosen by either Trevor Scott or Geoff Mason (Council Chairman), because of Mellor’s fame as a chemist. Needless to say, few students had heard of him. The ‘Mellor’ restaurant is now called Technique. Here is a menu from those golden times; when a three course lunch cost $7.50.
