Abstract

Nelson College student Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937) won a scholarship to Canterbury College, then part of the University of New Zealand system. In 1895, Rutherford secured the 1851 Exhibition award, which led to research at Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge. This photograph from John Campbellā€™s Rutherford. Supreme Scientist (1999) shows Rutherford (middle row, fourth from left) with his colleagues. He stands behind J. J. Thomson, the man who fostered such ground-breaking work at Cavendish.
