Abstract

In 1910, Professor James Gow Black wrote to Mellor informing him of his intention to resign the Chair of Chemistry at Otago University. By April 1911, Mellor had put together a printed booklet as his application for the vacant position. Mellor’s booklet contained a cover letter, a list of his published works, and references from Harold Dixon, William Perkin jnr, Sir Henry Roscoe and Sir William Ramsay. Surprisingly Mellor was unsuccessful in his bid and the Chair went to John Kenneth Harold Inglis (1877-1935). Inglis graduated from Canterbury and undertook post-graduate research at Edinburgh University from 1899.
