Abstract

The Wm. Clowes and Sons printing firm was founded in London in 1803 by William Clowes (1779-1847). His grandson, also William (1843-1904), set up in Beccles, Suffolk, in the 1870s. The company is still in operation today as part of the CPI Group, which has operations all over Europe. On the first of June 1938, Colonel G.C.K. Clowes wrote to Kenneth Potter, a director at Longmans, Green and Co, to lament the passing of Joseph Mellor (May, 1938). In his letter Clowes writes that Mellor was a ‘most generous friend’ and describes his ‘unfailing courtesy and fair mindedness (sic)’. Kenneth Potter forwarded the letter to Mellor’s widow, Emma.
