This 19th century wide-margin version of the Holy Bible was extremely useful to Mellor. He not only pasted in apposite printed notices (quotes by Carlyle and Browning) and newspaper cuttings (‘No Sceptic’), but also extensively annotated passages throughout. The double-page spread of Judges 14 and 15 is an excellent sample, containing his short- and long-hand notations. It is signed and dated: ‘J.W. Mellor, Holyrood, Dunedin, 1896’, which is about the time he passed his first examination in the BSc degree.
