Abstract

This memorial plaque was provided by the Otago branches of the Royal Society and New Zealand Institute of Chemistry to recognise Joseph Mellor’s outstanding contribution to chemistry and in particular ceramics. It was erected in the Chemistry Department due to Mellor having spent his student days at the University. After WWII disrupted plans for an earlier ceremony, the plaque was eventually unveiled in July 1945. Mellor’s nephew, Maurice Ellis, conducted the service, which was attended by the Chancellor of the University, the Very Rev. D. C. Herron and other dignitaries.
