Abstract

John William Colenso (1814–1883) was the first Bishop of Natal, and courted controversy with the publication of Remarks on the Proper Treatment of Polygamy in 1855, a Christian-based argument for tolerance of polygamy. Another controversy arose when he published The Pentateuch and Book of Joshua Critically Examined, which countered the doctrine of eternal punishment, and the notion that Holy Communion was a precondition to salvation. In a previous life, Colenso was an able mathematician and he wrote many widely read manuals on algebra (1841) and arithmetic (1843). He also wrote Plane Trigonometry (1851), which Mellor owned. Here is his later edition, annotated and dated: ‘Joseph W. Mellor 1886’.
