Abstract

Joseph Mellor was unable to afford to buy textbooks so borrowed them from wherever he could. He spent every evening after dinner ‘at his beloved studies’ in his corrugated iron shed in the garden copying the contents in longhand into his notebooks by a small paraffin lamp. His mother Emma would heat a brick and wrap it in flannel to help him keep warm. This is notebook no. 17, containing his transcriptions and diagrams from numerous chemistry books and articles.
