Numerous portraits exist of Joseph W. Mellor, chemist, ceramicist, and cartoonist. Significant occasions throughout his life were often the driving factor for him to sit, be still, and be photographed. This proof portrait was taken by the firm of Lafayette in Manchester in 1927, the year he was accepted into the Royal Society of London. This ‘Peter Pan of Ceramics’ as he called himself, is not yet fully grey or white-haired, as is evident in later portraits.
