Among the fifteen graduates in this photograph of 1897 is Joseph W. Mellor, who not only secured a senior scholarship in chemical science, but with the submission of his MSc thesis on cyanide process, won the Exhibition 1851 science scholarship. With him on this auspicious occasion are (back row): Andrew Burns, Joseph W. Mellor, James Garrow (foundation Professor of Law in Wellington), John O’Shea, and three unidentified students; (middle row): Parker McKinley, Margaret Barnett Cruickshank (New Zealand’s first woman general medical practitioner), John Robertson, Margaret Smyth (Principal of St Andrew’s Collegiate School in Dunedin, 1911), and one unidentified student with glasses; (front row) beside two unidentified students is Ethel Benjamin, New Zealand’s first female lawyer.
