Abstract
Thought to be one of the greatest prose writers in history, Cicero (106-43 BC) was born near Rome and educated in all things Greek. He was a prolific author and amazing linguist, credited with bringing a definitive style and elegance to the Latin language. Cicero has made an enormous contribution ‘to the intellectual content of the Western cultural tradition’ (Watson). His writings have influenced the likes of Martin Luther (1483-1546) and John Locke (1632-1704), and he was greatly admired by John Adams (1735-1826) and Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), the second and third president, respectively, of the United States of America.
