Abstract
These pages from Professor Fred Fastier’s book about pharmacy education at Otago explore the different possibilities for a more striking graduation outfit. Fastier’s championship of the new Bachelor of Pharmacy programme at Otago was fundamental to its successful establishment and subsequent development in the 1960s. Frederick Noel Fastier graduated with an MSc in Chemistry at Otago University in 1940 and gained a DPhil at Oxford in 1950. In 1952 he returned to Dunedin to take up a position as Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology in the Department of Medicine. When a combined Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy was established, Fastier was appointed its administrative head. In 1969 he was awarded a personal chair. This photograph of Fastier was taken by his colleague Dr Gary Blackman circa 1980.
