Abstract
The endpapers in this 1664 printing of Taylor’s treatise on popery have a curl pattern that was introduced into marbling design in England about the 18th century. This was about the time when this book was rebound in red morocco. The under-stated use of double gold-tooled fillets (lines) and two separate gold-tooled stamps have created a very simple but effective fast backed (where the spine is glued directly onto the case) binding. The five compartments down the spine have more elaborate tooling. A plainer but equally effective 20th century green goatskin binding wraps around Guarini’s older text of 1602. Note the use of corner ornaments, which are repeated on the spine, and the gold-tooled turn-ins.
