Abstract
The sub-title of The Newgate Calendar on display reads: ‘comprising interesting memoirs of the most notorious characters who have been convicted of outrages on the laws of England since the commencement of the eighteenth century: with occasional anecdotes and observations, speeches, confessions, and the last exclamations of sufferers’. Somewhat fittingly, the gold centrepiece decoration on this case-bound edition has an image of a Dick Turpin look-alike pointing his pistol in a threatening ‘stand and deliver’ stance while on ‘Black Bess’. Pistols, chains and a lamp bedeck the spine.
