Abstract

This French translation of Robert Dodsley’s The Economy of Human Life was printed in England. It is another near-Harleian binding and a fine representative of the style prevalent in England in the 1750s. The binder has built up an outer frame by repeated use of ‘flower’ tools and thin double fillets running along the outer edges of the red morocco covers. There is no central ornament. The gilding on the edges of the text-block is still visible, as are the cords along the spine that help attach the covers to the text block. A tail-band of green and white can also be seen; the head-band is long gone.
