Abstract

This is the first edition of John Hawkesworth’s famous chronicle of English maritime expeditions. It not only features Cook’s first voyage account, but also earlier ones by Byron, Wallis and Carteret. In this engraving by J. Hall, ‘Queen’ Purea of Tahiti extends a frond (an emblem of friendship) to Samuel Wallis and his men in July 1767. For his editorial labours, Hawkesworth was paid £6000.
