The Lindisfarne Gospels, known by the location where they were created, present an interesting case with regard to authorship. We know the main scribe of the work, Eadfrith, bishop of Lindisfarne from 698 until 721. A work such as the Lindisfarne Gospels, however, has clearly emanated from a monastic scriptorium, where no doubt many people contributed to its production. Only Eadfrith's name, however, is associated with the work, and his role is not that of author.
