Description

On mount in ink in unknown hand: Drawn by W. Hodgkins 1860 Otakia, East Taieri, Otago, New Zealand. The Reliance Hotel, Otokia, (on the left) was built in the early sixties, upon the discovery of the Otago Goldfields, for the convenience of travellers by the coach during the rush of diggers from Melbourne. Otokia is 18 miles south of Dunedin & situated in the Taieri Plain; 18 miles further is the important town of Tokomariro. These places are connected by railway; on mount in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: T.M. Hocken.
