Hocken; verso: New Zealand as it is; label in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: Part of Sir George Grey’s Native Policy during his second term of office in New Zealand was to confer various civil & other appointments upon the natives in common with their English fellow subjects. This was with the view of bringing the two races into closer & more friendly contact. T.M.H.
