Lower left (l.l.) in pencil: Diogenes -Rant, viewing with contempt, the follies of the age; through image in pencil: Let Otago flourish, High School, Advance Dunedin, Dunedin Saturday Review, Wormwood, Gall, Hope, the balm of life, Beggars Petition; u.c. in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: James Gordon Stuart Grant, editor of the “Saturday Review”, “Delphic Oracle” and other clever but libellous publications, came to Dunedin in 1855, raised a host of enemies by his continuous sneer and sarcasm and died poor and friendless in 1904. Circa 1865, T.M.H.
