Hocken; label: Na te Hakena Tenei Tiki; label in ink in Dr Hocken's hand: Joseph Somes MP for Dartmouth, was the second Governor of the New Zealand Company, succeeding the Earl of Durham. He was of humble origin but became the largest ship owner in the world. His vessel the Tory carried out the first expeditionto New Zealand under Colonel Wakefield in 1839. His widow Mrs Maria Somes of Anerley House, Brideford Devon, has given lands to found the Somes Scholarships in connection with Christís College Canterbury. Born 1787, Died June 25th 1845 at 58. T.M.H.
