Description
Upper left (u.l.) - lower right (l.r.) in ink: March 19th 1864, My dear little Janet, I wish you many happy returns of the day and hope you will be a good little girl and sometimes think of your Papa, who often wishes to see you all again - as I am so far off, I cannot give you anything but I send you a little sketch which has my portrait and those of 3 officers who often dine with me and Wood waits upon us. Give my love to your brothers and sisters, and say that I shall be very glad to come home and see you all again - and if you can play me a tune on the piano you shall have a funny doll like what is in the corner, called a native Idol. Your papa E.A.W; through image in ink: Dr Temple. Self. Col. Barstow. Mr Pickard; on sketchbook mount in pencil: Interior of our headquarters shanty at Te Awamutu.
