Lower right (l.r.) in ink: [illeg]; on original mount in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: Burcham’s House, River Hutt. These beautiful sketches were done by William Swainson FRS, the celebrated naturalist and extensive writer on natural history. He was one of the earliest settlers at Wellington in 1840, taking up his sections in the Hutt Valley. He died in 1850(?) T.M. Hocken; label: Na Te Hakena Tenei Tiki.
