Abstract

Esmond de Beer (1895–1990) gave his collection of books to the University of Otago Library over a period of some twenty years, from the 1970s to 1990. A book label using the University of Otago’s coat of arms was created to celebrate his generous gift. This plain label sits opposite the armorial bookplate of James Whatman (1741-1798), probably son of James, founder of England’s well-known papermaking firm of Whatman. Above de Beer’s label is the famed ‘Bibliotheca Heberiana’ stamp belonging to Richard Heber (1773-1833), the English book collector. The provenance of this book on Rome is formulated thus: Whatman-Heber-de Beer.
