Abstract

The bookplate of Sir Joseph Mawbey, 1st Baronet (1730–1798) on display in this copy of Samuel Boyce’s Poems on Several Occasions (1757) is a classic example of an armorial bookplate. It contains whispy mantling, the presence of a motto (Auriga Virtutum Prudentia; Prudence is the directress of the virtues), the name below, equally decorated, and is quartered. Mawbey was created a baronet in 1765, and perhaps this bookplate was engraved to celebrate that occasion.
