Abstract

‘Thou Rulest the Raging Sea’, the 59th chapter in Peter Carey’s Oscar & Lucinda, provides the stimulus for this frontispiece produced by the New York City-based artist, Katherine Street. Her love of collages is evident in this illustration, although it is hard to reconcile Lucinda’s image of Oscar’s face as ‘long and censorious’ versus the reality of ‘doe-like, almost pretty, with soft eyes…’. This novel by Australian Peter Carey won the 1988 Booker Prize, and the 1989 Miles Franklin Award.
